As veterinarians, our passion for helping animals drives us. From the moment we chose this profession, we’ve dedicated ourselves to improving the health and lives of pets. We took an oath to prevent and relieve animal suffering, and it's something we carry deeply in our hearts. But as much as we try, the reality is that we can’t always help every pet—and that is one of the hardest truths to face.
I’ve spent countless days thinking about the pets I couldn’t reach, whether because of financial constraints, geographic limitations, or simply the inability to provide the specialized services some animals require. Many in this profession grapple with a feeling of helplessness. Seeing an animal in need but knowing there’s a barrier—financial, medical, or logistical—feels like an unbearable weight on your chest.
Pets and The Emotional Toll
We’re not immune to the emotions that come with this job. Every pet we see becomes a part of our hearts, and their owners become like family. The most challenging moments are when a pet desperately needs care, but their family cannot afford the treatment. The conversations we have in these situations are heart-wrenching, knowing that the decision a family has to make might not be based on what’s best for the pet but on what they can afford.
And then there are those pets we can’t physically get to in time. As someone who practices mobile veterinary care, I aim to bridge the gap between convenience and quality care. But even with this model, there are limitations. Whether it’s a rural area I can’t reach or a pet in need during hours when I’m unavailable, knowing an animal is suffering while help is just out of reach is a unique pain.
Wanting to Do More for Pets
Despite the frustrations, our commitment to helping animals never fades. This is why many of us look for other ways to make a difference. We volunteer with shelters, donate services, or create programs to help low-income or homeless pets. For example, at My Vet at Home, we’ve recently launched an initiative through the 'Affordable Vet Care For All' program, where we’re donating to a GoFundMe campaign to make veterinary care more accessible to pets in need. It’s a small way to give back, but it’s a start.
Moments like these give us hope and help ease some of the frustration. While we may not be able to help every pet, we can keep finding ways to do better, reach more animals, and work towards a future where no pet suffers because it can’t get the care it deserves.
The Path Forward
Every day, veterinarians worldwide fight to improve the lives of the animals in their communities. We understand that not every situation is within our control, but we’re still driven by a profound love for what we do and the hope that we can help just one more pet tomorrow.
And though it’s frustrating and heartbreaking when we can’t help every pet, we’ll continue doing what we can—one patient, one family, and one small act of kindness at a time.
This profession isn’t always easy, but knowing we can make a difference, even in small ways, keeps us moving forward. We may not be able to help every pet, but it means everything to the ones we can.
